How Much Does Shopify Cost?

The cost of using Shopify depends on various factors, including the pricing plan you choose, any additional apps or services you may need, and your specific business requirements. Here are some key factors that you must consider when determining the total cost of using Shopify.

1. Shopify Pricing Plans

Shopify offers several pricing plans with different monthly subscription fees. The three main plans are Basic Shopify, Shopify, and Advanced Shopify, with costs ranging from $29 to $299 per month. Each of these plans has multiple rates and fees, such as monthly prices, credit card rates, and third-party transaction fees.

The monthly price is a recurring subscription charge that you need to pay as an online merchant for using Shopify. This price varies depending on the plan you choose. The price associated with the plan you choose is included in the bill issued at the end of your assigned billing cycle.

Now, the pricing plans offered by Shopify include various features such as an online store, unlimited products, a website and blog, 24/7 support, and more. As you move up the pricing tiers, you gain access to more advanced features, lower transaction fees, and better shipping discounts.

Therefore, it’s important to choose a plan that aligns with your business needs and budget. Additionally, you must consider the potential impact of transaction fees on your overall costs, especially if you plan to use an external payment gateway.

2. Transaction Fees

Then, apart from pricing plans and credit card rates, you may also have to pay third-party transaction fees in case you use a third-party payment provider to take customer payments. This fee applies to every transaction. It covers the cost for Shopify to integrate with external payment providers.

Every Shopify plan charges a different third-party transaction fee. For instance, if you choose the Basic Shopify Plan, you are charged a third-party transaction fee of 2%. Likewise, if you choose the Shopify Plan and Advanced Shopify Plan, you are charged a third-party transaction fee of 1.0% and 0.5% respectively.

However, if you use Shopify Payments in place of a third-party payment provider, you are not charged any third-party transaction fees for orders that are processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, and Paypal Express. Furthermore, you are not charged transaction fees on manual payment methods such as cash, cash on delivery (COD), and bank transfers.

Note that Shopify Plus merchants who use Shopify Payments pay no transaction fees except for merchants in Austria, Belgium, and Sweden.

3. Credit Card Rates

Credit card rates are nothing but the fees that Shopify charges to allow you to accept major credit cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, as payment in your store. Accordingly, there is no need for you to pay any fees to the credit card payment provider itself. Furthermore, the credit card rates that Shopify charges vary for your Shopify online store and Shopify POS due to the security and risk of taking a payment online versus taking a payment in person.

Also, note that the credit card rates that Shopify charges vary depending on the plan that you choose.

4. Additional Apps And Services

Shopify has an extensive App Store where you can find various apps to enhance your store’s functionality. These apps help you to enhance and customize your online stores with various functionalities. For instance, these apps can help you with marketing, sales, customer service, analytics, and more.

Note that the cost of these apps varies, and some are available for free, while others require a subscription or one-time payment.

5. Domain Name

If you don’t already have a domain name, you may need to purchase one. Shopify allows you to purchase and manage domain names directly through the platform. The process involves checking the availability of your desired domain, selecting it, and completing the purchase.

If you already own a domain from another registrar, you can transfer it to Shopify. This process typically involves unlocking the domain at the current registrar, obtaining an authorization code, and initiating the transfer within Shopify.

Further, if you prefer to keep your domain registered with another provider, you can connect it to your Shopify store. This involves updating the DNS settings at your domain registrar to point to Shopify’s servers.

Then, you must know that Shopify charges an annual fee for domain registration, and the cost can vary depending on the domain extension (e.g., .com, .net, .store). The pricing is typically separate from your Shopify subscription plan.

Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about domain expiry on Shopify as by default, Shopify enables automatic renewal for domain names. This ensures that your domain registration doesn’t expire unintentionally. You can manage the auto-renewal settings in your Shopify account.

5. Themes

Themes in Shopify refer to the templates that determine the overall design and layout of your online store. Shopify provides a variety of themes, ranging from free options to premium, paid themes.

While Shopify provides free themes, you might choose to purchase a premium theme for additional features or a unique design. You can customize themes to align with your brand identity and business requirements. For instance, you can modify various aspects, such as colors, fonts, layouts, and images, through the Shopify Theme Editor.

The Shopify Theme Store is where you can explore and choose themes for your store. Themes are categorized based on industry, style, and features, making it easier to find one that suits your business.

Once you’ve selected a theme, you can install it directly from the Shopify admin. The installed theme will become the active theme for your store.

In addition to themes provided by Shopify, you can even use third-party themes available from independent developers. These themes may offer unique designs and features.

FAQs

Is Shopify Free?

Shopify is not entirely free, but it does offer a free trial period during which you can explore and set up your online store without immediate charges. The length of the free trial may vary, and it is usually for a period of 3 to 14 days, depending on any promotions or offers that Shopify may be running.

Once the free trial period ends, you’ll need to choose and subscribe to one of Shopify’s paid plans to continue using the platform.

Shopify offers the following main pricing plans:

  • Basic Shopify: This is the entry-level plan and comes with essential features for small businesses.
  • Shopify: The mid-tier plan with additional features compared to Basic Shopify.
  • Advanced Shopify: The higher-tier plan with advanced features suitable for scaling businesses.
  • Shopify Plus: An enterprise-level solution for large and high-growth businesses with custom pricing.

Each plan has a monthly subscription fee and the cost increases with the level of features and services offered. Additionally, transaction fees may apply based on the chosen payment gateway, unless you use Shopify Payments, in which case the transaction fees are waived.

While the subscription plans involve costs, it’s important to consider the value and features provided by Shopify, especially in terms of its user-friendly interface, hosting, security, and the ability to scale your online business.

Does Shopify Have A Transaction Fee?

As mentioned in the tables above, Shopify does have transaction fees for each sale made through its platform.

Transaction fees in Shopify refer to the charges imposed on each sale made through your online store. These fees vary based on your Shopify pricing plan and the method of payment used for the transaction.

The following are the transaction fees that Shopify charges per transaction in each of the premium plans that it offers:

1. Basic Shopify Plan

  • Online credit card rates: 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction
  • In-person credit card rates (using Shopify POS): 2.7%
  • Additional fees for using external payment gateways: 2.0%

2. Shopify Plan

  • Online credit card rates: 2.6% + 30 cents per transaction
  • In-person credit card rates: 2.5%
  • Additional fees for using external payment gateways: 1.0%

3. Advanced Shopify Plan

  • Online credit card rates: 2.4% + 30 cents per transaction
  • In-person credit card rates: 2.4%
  • Additional fees for using external payment gateways: 0.5%

Note that online credit card rates refer to the fee that applies to sales made through your online store, and it is a percentage of the transaction amount plus a fixed fee per transaction.

Then, the in-person credit card rates refer to the fee that applies if you use Shopify POS for in-person sales such as at a physical retail location.

Finally, the additional fees for using external payment gateways refer to the fee that applies if you choose to use an external payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, that is, a third-party payment processor like PayPal or Stripe.

Let’s understand this with the help of an example. Say, you’re on the Basic Shopify Plan, and you make an online sale of $100 using Shopify Payments. The transaction fee would be 2.9% of $100 + 30 cents, resulting in a transaction fee of $3.20. If you used an external payment gateway instead, the additional fee would be 2.0% of $100, adding $2.00 to the total transaction fees.
